I had played with Don in Europe a few times with Dizzy but this was the only time in the States, at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1970. He was featured during the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet’s set and we were the back up rhythm section. David Lee on drums, George Davis on guitar, Larry Rockwell on bass and Mike Longo on piano. It was a joy and an honor and privilege to play with him. On of the highlights of my life.
